Cursed

i am cursed.

this month which is not over yet, has been officially declared as a cur-sed month by me. (Cur-sed: in ye olde englishe stylee)

i have just had my third car accident this month.

and i have never had an accident before.

me thinks the wormtongue effect, as powerful as it is, had nothing to do with it this time.

me thinks this just may be BAD KARMA.

cursed i tell you.

three is the magic number...

Taxi

yesterday i got in a taxi.

i used to love travelling in taxi's because of the conversations i would always end up having with the drivers, which were mostly highly entertaining and from which i learnt a lot in my early days as a newbie in Cairo.

yesterday the journey was quite different.

i won't go into what the driver said, or how he complained, i will say that there was real, tangible anger there. it filled his taxi to the brim and flowed out of the open windows in thick, heavy waves.

just think of all those millions of taxi's out there, each one an isolated, cramped, polluted cage.

today i read this article, nothing new, but rounds it up nicely.

Indie's Back

i've been to the cinema so much lately that i feel like i've got movies coming out of my ears, most of them crap really, except for Iron Man, which i have to say had much to do with the mozza-ness (read: hot-ness) of Downey Jr.

so yes, Indiana Jones is back, and i was slightly worried that it would kind of get icky, what with Harrison being all old and stuff..but no, it was great, and finally a film i can actually see myself watching more than once.

yay for Indie and his hat!

looking forward to the new Hulk now, which i was a big fan of as a child in the eighties, and which looks like loads of fun. its got Ed Norton in it, which is good enough for me :)

Siren, Still Singing

Vladimir Nabokov, one of the most stunning writers I have ever come across, died 30 years ago. Whilst he was racing against death, he wrote in his own very unique way, a final novel - which he then instructed his wife and son to burn.

They couldn't do it, and now "The Original of Laura" is about to be published.

Read here an interview with his very eloquent son.

I will never forget the opening line from his novel Lolita:

"Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta."
